Japan finds animal drugs exceed MRLs

Around 119 veterinary drugs exceeded their maximum residue limits (MRLs) in vegetables, fruit and fish imported from China, Taiwan, Ecuador, Ghana and Australia between June and December 2006, reports the Japanese ministry of health's food inspection center.

The Japanese government promulgated a new positive list system for chemical residues, including those from animal drugs, in food stuffs last May (Animal Pharm No 592, p 22). The ministry of health also found that 264 agrochemicals were over their MRLs. The total number of cases, 383, was triple the number reported in the same period of 2005.

[Ed. To insure you're recommending the appropriate withdrawal times to comply with the Japanese MRLs, visit the MRL database on the National Pork Board website http://www.pork.org/Producers/JapanMRL.aspx and review the AASV position statement at http://www.aasv.org/aasv/position-japanMRL.html. It would also be worthwhile to recommend that your clients view the MRL video available online at http://www.exportpork.com. This video discusses the MRL issue and the potential impact of non-compliance on the US pork industry.]
