Diagnostic Sample Collection
Oral Fluid Collection in Pigs — A video developed by the Center for Food Security and Public Health at Iowa State University in collaboration with the National Pork Board and the American Association of Swine Veterinarians describing oral fluid collection and sampling techniques.
Cerebrospinal Fluid Sample Collection — Educational materials on the best practices for collecting cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in field conditions were created by the collaboration of the Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC), Dr. Maria Clavijo, DVM, PhD, and Dr. Rachel Derscheid, DVM, PhD, DACVP. These materials include a two-minute video and associated printable handout outlining the sample collection in a step-by-step process for veterinarians and producers to obtain clinically relevant isolates for Streptococcus suis and Glaesserella parasuis cases.
Meningeal Swab Sample Collection — Educational materials on the best practices for collecting meningeal swabs in field conditions were created by the collaboration of the Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC), Dr.
Surveillance
Domestic Disease Monitoring Report, Swine Health Information Center –SHIC’s domestic disease monitoring reports are the result of the veterinary diagnostic lab (VDL) data standardization project the Center supported. The model describes dynamics of disease detection by pathogen over time, specimen, age group, and geographical space.
Swine Disease Reporting System (SDRS), Iowa State University — The Swine Disease Reporting System (SDRS) consists of multiple projects that aggregate data from participating veterinary diagnostic laboratories (VDLs) in the United States of America and reports the major findings to the swine industry (video below).
Morrison Swine Health Monitoring Project, University of Minnesota — The Morrison Swine Health Monitoring Project (MSHMP) is currently the largest voluntary swine health project in the United States.
