50. Historic 1989 AASP Newsletter: PRRS, Presidents, PQA, and Pig Pro
Donated by AASV
Purchased by: Dr. Kerry Keffaber, $75

Listen up, all of you history buffs out there! Here's your chance to own an original copy of the AASP Newsletter containing one of the first published accounts of what we now know as PRRS. The article, Reproductive Failure of Unknown Etiology, was authored by Dr. Kerry Keffaber and appeared in the second issue of the AASP Newsletter (the precursor to the Journal of Swine Health and Production). It has been the most-requested reprint of any AASP/V manuscript in the association's history. At the time of publication, Dr. Keffaber was engaged in private practice at the Swine Health Center in Roann, Indiana. Later, he served AASV on the Executive Committee, ascending to the position of AASV President in 2008.

Those facts alone make the Sept-Oct 1989 issue of the AASP Newsletter quite desirable, but there's more. This particular copy belonged to none other than Dr. Bob Morrison: noted PRRS researcher, leader in the PRRS elimination effort, and past-president of AASV. The mailing label bears Dr. Morrison's name and address at the University of Minnesota, and it's clear that Dr. Keffaber's article piqued Bob's interest, as he underlined the words "undiagnosed reproductive failure on 11 farms" in red ink. Talk about history in the making!

There are additional tidbits of swine industry history contained within the twelve pages of Volume 1, Number 2, including mention of NPPC's then soon-to-be released Quality Assurance Program (Level 1), as well as a full-page spread advertisement for the Pig Pro production management program offered by Oxford Veterinary Laboratories. All of this took place during AASP's 20th anniversary year! Don't miss the opportunity to own this one-of-a-kind piece of AASP history.

In case you're new to the auction, here's the backstory: We have 3 gift cards for you to bid on (separately) - cards P, I, and G! They are mystery cards - the mystery is that no one knows what you will buy and you don't know the value of the card(s) you're bidding on! But there's more value to the cards than meets the eye - the pig featured on the cards is Jasper, who belonged to Dr. Max Rodibaugh's father and was the Grand Champion barrow at the 1969 Chicago International. (Don't forget, 1969 was also the year of AASV's genesis.) Jasper's claim to fame doesn't stop there - he was also the pig the small Breyer model was made from. 83. Grilla Wood Pellet Smoker
Donated by: Huvepharma
Purchased by: David Menz, $775

Got pork? We've got just what you need: a Grilla Pellet Smoker!

TheGrilla Wood Pellet Grill features convection grilling airflow for Pro-Smoke barbecue smoke flavor. Grilla's EvenTemp Chamber, Keep Heat Swing Lid and Never Flare Flavor Disk produce a consistent heat and smoke level in the cooking chamber. The Grilla also has a convertible, two-tiered stainless steel cooking surface and Set ‘n Forget digital controls. Autostart means no matches, lighter fluid or gas are required. The Grilla pellet smoker also comes equipped with EZ glide wheels, flame viewing window, a powder-coat finish, and a stainless-steel work surface.

One of the reasons the Grilla is such a hot commodity is its heating technology. The Grilla comes equipped with an auto ignition and a set ‘n forget digital control system so you don’t have to be glued to your grill all day long. The digital controls will let you adjust the heat between 180 and 500 degrees in 5 degree increments, which allows you tremendous cooking flexibility. The included digital control panel and meat probe displays both the grill’s current temperature and the current temperature of your meat. The control panel also makes sure pellets are fed through the firepot continuously. The Grilla’s design also helps you avoid flare ups due to its Never Flare Flavor Disc and the blower fan. This keeps the flames away from your food and also allows for convection style cooking. On top of all these features, the burn grate and firepot are both made of durable stainless steel.

The Grilla’s unique shape provides some very real benefits. For one, the round shape eliminates hot and cold corners. Also, the unique swinging lid allows you to keep heat in when you check on your food, and you can also leave it partially open with zero effort, letting you work with two hands if necessary.

The Grilla’s Interior
The Grilla’s interior provides a lot of flexibility for your barbecues as well. The upper grate pops out allowing you room for whole chickens, turkeys and roasts. The fire area is insulated, and the grates are made from ¼-inch stainless steel rod. Here’s how the interior measures up:
* Main Cooking Area: 346"
* Upper Cooking Area: 142"
