Committee Shoat Out: Pig Welfare Committee

Committee Shoat Out: The Pig Welfare Committee continues to review and update the AASV Recommendations for the Depopulation of Swine.

To capture the first-hand experiences gained by veterinarians and farmers faced with depopulation and improve our resources or build new tools to meet the needs of the AASV membership, the AASV received funding from the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service through their National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program (NADPRP). A subcommittee of the Pig Welfare Committee used results from research studies, field trials and the first-hand knowledge gained through the COVID-19 market disruption or other depopulation experiences to revise the recommendations. Read more about the project in https://aasv.org/shap/issues/v29n2/v29n2advocacy.html JSHAP.

During the spring 2021 meeting, the AASV Board of Directors approved the Pig Welfare Committee’s recommendations to modify AASV’s position statements on the castration of swine and tail docking and teeth clipping of swine. The Board approved the committee’s recommendations to reaffirm AASV’s position statements on pig welfare and sow housing. The committee will review the AASV position statement on anti-abuse during the next committee meeting. All AASV position statements can be viewed at https://aasv.org/aasv/positions.htm.

The Pig Welfare Committee will meet virtually August 31, 2021, 8:00am-12:00pm CT.
