1999 World Pork Expo Highlights
The AASP was well represented at this year’s World Pork Expo, held June 10-12 in Des Moines, Iowa. For the fifth straight year, we exhibited at Expo where we had the opportunity to visit with swine producers and veterinarians from around the world. As in past years, our main focus at this event is to stimulate interest and awareness about our organization and about what services AASP members can provide. Expo also provides an opportunity for us to educate producers and others on a variety of topics and issues. This year we had available for distribution at the AASP booth a generous selection of educational items, including back issues of Swine Health and Production, Pork Production videotapes, euthanasia brochures, boar stud guidelines, isolation and acclimation of incoming breeding swine recommendations, AASP membership applications (for veterinarians only), Swine Health and Production subscription forms, and producer brochures with information about our organization.
In addition, we participated along with other Pork Producer Partners in recognizing the approximately 450 PQA Level III producers who attended Expo and who verified their Level III status at the NPPC’s PQA booth, by providing them with a colorful pencil promoting our organization’s phone number and website address. Twenty-four producers also won copies of Dennis Avery’s Saving the Planet with Pesticides and Plastics. AASP members who would like a copy of this book can order it from

Our participation in Expo requires a cooperative effort by our membership. Special thanks this year go to AASP Executive Director Dr. Tom Burkgren for setting up and taking down the AASP booth, Administrative Assistant Sue Schulteis for organizing literature and promotional materials, and to Dr. Mike Senn for coordinating the staffing for the booth. Thanks also to the following AASP members who signed on to work in the booth: Drs. Angela Baysinger, Neil Becker, Gary Bosch, Jim Bradford, Tom Burkgren, Terry Cowan, Larry Firkins, Jer Geiger, Ames Grobstein, Bill Hollis, Jeff Husa, John Kolb, Bruce McClain, Bob Morrison, Brian Roggow, Mike Senn, Rick Sibbel, Eileen Thacker, Don Walter, and Ron White.
