The AASV Foundation continues to provide support to veterinary students who participate in swine externships. The Swine Externship Grant Program is available to all veterinary students in an effort to encourage students to consider a career in swine medicine and enable them to obtain valuable experience in a swine practice. The grant amounts range from $200 to $500 per student, based upon the actual expenses incurred during the externship.
A veterinary student who completes an externship of at least 2 weeks’ duration in a swine practice or a mixed practice with a considerable swine component may apply for the grant. Both the student and at least one member of the hosting practice must be members of the AASV. Students are encouraged to submit their grant applications as soon as they have confirmed their externship dates. The grants are limited to one per student.
In addition to student information, the grant application requests a letter from the hosting practice containing details of the planned externship. After the externship has been completed and the practice has confirmed the student’s participation, the student submits a brief report of his or her experiences along with expense receipts to the AASV Foundation before the funds are disbursed.
The foundation has awarded grants to more than 70 students from the United States and Canada since the program’s inception in 2002.
The grant application is available at www.aasv.org/students/externgrant.htm. For more information, contact the AASV office: 830 26th Street, Perry, IA 50220;

New FUNdraiser for the foundation: Piggy bank raffle
American Association of Swine Veterinarians Foundation Chairman Dr Warren Wilson has been collecting spare change in this unique “flying pig” piggy bank since he graduated from veterinary school back in 19… well, let’s just say it’s been a few years! The bank measures about 9 inches long and 4 inches tall. It is chock-full of coins, some of which could be rather valuable, given their age.
Warren has generously donated the piggy bank to the AASV Foundation for this new FUNdraising activity to be conducted at the AASV Annual Meeting in Phoenix. Here’s the deal: buy a raffle ticket and guess the total amount of money contained within the pig. Tickets cost $5.00 for one guess, or improve your odds by spending $20.00 for five guesses. The person whose guess comes closest to the actual amount wins the piggy bank AND its contents! In the event of a tie, a drawing will be held to determine the winner. ALL of the proceeds benefit the AASV Foundation.
