Call for papers - AASV 2007 student seminar

Veterinary student scholarships

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians announces an opportunity for up to 15 veterinary students to make scientific presentations during the student seminar at the AASV Annual Meeting on Sunday, March 4, 2007, in Orlando, Florida. Interested students are invited to submit a one-page abstract of a research paper, clinical case study, or literature review for consideration. Abstracts and supplementary materials must be received by Dr Sandy Amass by midnight on Friday, September 22, 2006 (firm deadline). Faxes are acceptable. Late abstracts will not be considered. The abstracts will be reviewed by an unbiased professional panel consisting of a private practitioner, an academician at a school from which no students have submitted an abstract, and an industry veterinarian. Students whose papers are selected for presentation at the meeting will be notified by October 16, 2006, and will be expected to provide the complete paper or abstract for publication by November 15, 2006.

To help defray the costs of attending the AASV meeting, Alpharma Animal Health is generously providing a $500 honorarium to the student presenter of each paper selected for the seminar.

Veterinary students whose papers are selected for presentation at the meeting will be eligible to compete for one of several veterinary student scholarships awarded through the AASV Foundation. The oral presentations will be judged to determine the amount of the scholarship awarded.

Alpharma funds a $5000 scholarship for the student whose paper, oral presentation, and supporting information are judged best overall.

The Eli Lilly & Company Foundation, on behalf of Elanco Animal Health, has provided additional funding enabling the AASV Foundation to provide awards of $2500 each for 2nd through 5th place, $1500 each for 6th through 10th place, and $500 each for 11th through 15th place.

New - Poster session!

Students whose papers are not selected for oral presentation in the student seminar will be eligible to be considered for participation in a poster session at the annual meeting. Up to fifteen (15) posters will be selected through a competitive process. A stipend of $250 will be awarded to those students who are selected and participate in the poster presentation.

Complete information for preparing and submitting abstracts is available on the AASV website (http://www.aasv.org/annmtg/2007/studentseminar.htm ). Please note: the rules for submission should be followed carefully. For more information, contact the AASV office (Tel: 515-465-5255; Fax: 515-465-3832; E-mail: aasv@aasv.org).

Call for abstracts - Industrial partners

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians announces the call for abstracts for the Industrial Partners session of the 38th AASV Annual Meeting, to be held March 3 to 6, 2007, in Orlando, Florida. This is an opportunity for commercial companies to make brief presentations of a technical, educational nature to members of the AASV. As in previous years, each presentation is limited to 15 minutes. The session will be held on Sunday afternoon, March 4, 2007.

Topic title, a brief description (abstract) of the presentation content, and presenter information (name, address, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address) must be received in the AASV office by October 1, 2006. Send to: Commercial Sessions, AASV, 902 1st Avenue, Perry, IA 50220; Fax: 515-465-3832; E-mail: aasv@aasv.org.

There will be a review of the abstracts to assure technical merit of the presentations. Restricted program space necessitates a limit on the number of presentations per company. Authors will be notified of their selection by October 16, 2006, and must submit the complete paper for publication in the meeting proceedings by November 15, 2006.

Ames Golf and Country Club to host AASV Foundation golf outing

The AASV Foundation's Midwest Golf Outing is set for Tuesday, August 22, 2006, at the Ames Golf and Country Club in Ames, Iowa. Swine industry stakeholders, AASV members, and their guests are invited to participate in the 18-hole best-ball contest. Proceeds from the event provide funding for the foundation's endowment.

Golfer check-in begins at 9:00 am the day of the event. Coffee and pastries will be provided, along with an opportunity to hit a few practice balls on the driving range. The four-person team, best-ball competition begins with a shotgun start at 10:00 am. Box lunches and beverages will be supplied on-course, and a reception will follow the golfing to recognize team and individual contest winners. Registration includes 18 holes of best-ball golf, golf cart rental, morning refreshments, lunch, and the concluding reception with awards.

The foundation encourages AASV members to register a team (four golfers per team) to engage in the friendly competition. A golf invitation is a great way to recognize and spend time with those special clients, friends, or family members! Individuals and couples are also welcome to register and will be assigned to a team. PDFRegistrations may be submitted on the adjacent form (PDF) and are due August 8. For more information, contact the AASV office: Tel: 515-465-5255; Fax: 515-465-3832; E-mail: aasv@aasv.org.

Proceeds from the golf outing provide support for the AASV Foundation as it seeks to "Ensure our future...create a legacy" for swine veterinarians. Income generated by the endowment enables the foundation to fund programs such as the swine externship grants for senior veterinary students, travel stipends for students attending the AASV annual meeting, and funding for research with direct application to the profession.
