USDA Publishes Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on New Framework for Livestock Disease Indemnity Valuation

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is publishing an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) to solicit public comments on a new approach to indemnity valuation and a new indemnity framework. This approach aims to standardize and provide greater consistency to the livestock indemnification process.

USDA Updates Swine Hemorrhagic Fevers Surveillance Plan

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is updating the Swine Hemorrhagic Fevers: African and Classical Swine Fevers Integrated Surveillance Plan to reflect recent enhancements in the program. APHIS developed the initial surveillance plan in 2019 to further its overall ASF preparedness efforts. These updates reflect additional measures put in place over the last year, particularly in light of the detection of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the western hemisphere which has not been present since the 1980s.

USDA to Measure Feral Swine Damage in 11 States

The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service in cooperation with the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service – Wildlife Services, is conducting a Feral Swine Damage Survey to measure the costs of feral swine damage to crop producers growing corn, soybeans, wheat, rice, peanuts and sorghum in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas.

APHIS Extends Comment Period on Strategic Plan Framework

In response to requests, stakeholders will have an additional 30 days to share their thoughts on the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) strategic plan to guide the agency’s work over the next 5 years. Comments must be received by July 31, 2022. APHIS appreciates insights from all stakeholders and is looking forward to reviewing and considering these insights as we finalize the new strategic plan. We expect to finalize and publish the new strategic plan this fall and will post it on the APHIS website.

USDA Announces New SARS-COV-2 Research Funding Opportunity Through the American Rescue Plan Act

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has announced it will commit up to $24 million for research grants through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases (EEID) program. These grants will support research that directly aligns with APHIS’ American Rescue Plan strategic framework and will support APHIS and its One Health partners’ efforts to identify risks and plan effective interventions to prevent transmission of SARS-CoV-2 at the human-animal interface and to prevent impacts to the food supply.

APHIS Marks 50th Anniversary

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is celebrating half a century of protecting U.S. borders from animal disease and enforcing the Animal Welfare Act. The USDA created APHIS in April 1972 to consolidate animal and plant health inspection duties within a single agency.

APHIS Announces Open Period for 2022 Funding Opportunities Supporting Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Activities

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is continuing to advance animal disease preparedness and response through its Farm Bill animal health programs. APHIS is seeking project proposals for the National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program (NADPRP) and the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN). The agency is also announcing its next round of purchases for the National Animal Vaccine and Veterinary Countermeasures Bank (NAVVCB).

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced today new efforts to help prevent the introduction and spread of African swine fever in the U.S. Through an outreach and awareness campaign called “Protect Our Pigs,” APHIS will support commercial pork producers, veterinarians, and pig owners with information and resources to help safeguard America’s swine population and the pork industry.
