ISU Offering Veterinary Student Internships in Swine Medicine

The Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine (ISU CVM) is seeking veterinary student applicants for two distinct, swine-specific internship programs, the Swine Medicine Applied Research Internship (SMARI) with the Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC), and the Swine Veterinary Internship Program (SVIP). Both SMEC and SVIP have several openings for summer 2016 and are uniquely different programs.

Interested in Pursuing Graduate Education?

The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine has available two Fellowships, the Carlos Pijoan Fellowship and the Leman Fellowship to pursue a MS or PhD in the areas of swine production and medicine. Students will be exposed to a science-based interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving encompassing the areas of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, population health, swine productivity and disease prevention, control and elimination. Fellows will join a vibrant and passionate group of faculty and graduate students devoted to tackling significant problems that impact swine and human health. Throughout the course of study, students will spend significant time in the field, interacting with industry leaders, building networks, and gaining insights into the issues challenging the global swine industry. The combination of graduate training and exposure to the industry will position students to assume leadership roles in animal agriculture in the areas of teaching, research, and service. Prior fellows have made significant contributions to science and the swine industry with research-based projects in the areas of disease control and elimination for PRRSV, influenza, Mycoplasma and lawsonia. Interested candidates must apply to the University of Minnesota VMED graduate program at http://www.cvm.umn.edu/students/ms-phd/VMED/index.htm by December 15, and submit a letter of intent for the fellowships and copy of CV to Montse Torremorell (torr0033@umn.edu)

NPIF Interns Selected

The AASV Student Recruitment Committee reviewed 44 applications for the 2016 National Pork Industry Foundation (NPIF) Internship Program administered by the AASV Foundation. The NPIF has provided funding for six veterinary students to gain experience in the swine industry through a summer internship with a swine practitioner. The NPIF stipends are intended for any 1st or 2nd year veterinary student, regardless of any previous swine experiences.

Legislative Externship Available for Senior Veterinary Students

The National Pork Producers Council has an externship opportunity for four senior veterinary students annually. The externships are two weeks in length and take place in Washington D.C. and other relevant locations. The goal of the program is to expose students to the role of veterinarians in public policy and regulation at the national level. Students will interact with a number of organizations that advocate on behalf of animal agriculture and veterinary medicine during their externship. They will also participate in the NPPC’s Legislative Action Conference (LAC) during which they will be able to listen to a variety of speakers, interact with producers and veterinarians, and conduct visits to their Congressional delegation. Externships should be scheduled to correspond with dates for the LAC.

Waldo Genetics Announces Second Annual Scholarship

Waldo Genetics has announced that they are now accepting applications for their annual swine industry scholarship. The Waldo Genetics Swine Industry Scholarship is designed to recognize the efforts of students that have chosen the swine industry as their career. The scholarship is available to returning students enrolled in an accredited swine industry-related program.
