People on the Move: Dr. Albert Canturri

The Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is pleased to welcome a new food animal pathologist. Dr. Albert Canturri was born and raised in Andorra. He obtained his DVM from the University of Zaragoza, Spain, in 2014, went on to complete a residency in anatomic pathology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, and obtained Board Certification by the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (Diplomate ECVP) in 2019. He then started his PhD at the Mycoplasma Research Laboratory of the University of Minnesota, advised by Dr. Maria Pieters. His research focuses on culture-independent determination of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae viability and its implications for disease control and pathogen eradication. Dr. Canturri has been working as a part-time pathologist for the VDL since 2020 and was recently hired as a full time Assistant Professor in the Veterinary Population Medicine department and a Food Animal Diagnostician at the VDL. Boehringer Ingelheim Announces 2023 GRANTS Recipients

Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health announced today the 2023 award recipients for the Growing Research and New Technology for Swine (GRANTS) program. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the program, which funds critical, field-applicable research into swine health and production. This year’s GRANTS recipients will receive $35,000 each to fund new advancements in porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) risk factors and diagnostics, as well as RNA virus stabilization strategies.

Comment Now: Swine Traceability Standards

In response to the growing threat from foreign animal diseases (FADs) including African Swine Fever (ASF), representatives from the National Pork Producers Council and the National Pork Board identified six ASF preparedness priorities for industry. Among them -“develop a plan to regain export markets” – which will require improvements to our ability to trace live hogs.

Position Announcement: Swine Veterinarian (Veterinarian I – $5,000 New Hire Bonus)

Tyson Foods Inc, the world’s largest protein producer and the second-largest food production company in the Fortune 500, is looking for a Veterinarian to join our Pork Group Technical Services team. The Pork Group Veterinarian I is primarily responsible for direct interaction with contract producers, and management company leadership in our Indiana/Ohio grow-finish operations. Daily tasks will include: oversight of all farm herd health needs; maintenance of proper swine herd health and movement verification paperwork; preservation of all veterinary client/patient relationships and veterinary feed directives; and oversight of secure pork supply plans.

Position Announcement: Senior Swine Veterinarian (Veterinarian II – $6,000 New Hire Bonus)

Tyson Foods Inc, the world’s largest protein producer and the second-largest food production company in the Fortune 500, is looking for a Senior Veterinarian to join our Pork Group Technical Services team. The Pork Group Senior Veterinarian (Veterinarian II) is responsible for ensuring the maintenance and improvement of its swine herd health, improving the production performance of the swine herd through better environment management and training, oversight of biosecurity, risk management, and disease elimination programs. This includes consulting with all levels of swine management concerning preventative and therapeutic medicine, educating Team Members on animal husbandry, physiology, environment, and animal growth, and ensuring compliance with all agricultural regulations concerning health eradication programs and animal movement.

Call for Abstracts: AASV Research Topics

Plans are underway for the 55th annual meeting of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) to take place February 24-27, 2024 in Nashville, Tennessee. As part of the meeting, there will be an oral and a poster session highlighting research projects related to swine health and production (virology, bacteriology, parasitology, environment, food safety, odor, welfare, etc.). Abstracts are now being accepted to be considered for presentation during the Research Topics session, which will be held Sunday, February 25. Submissions are due August 15 (firm deadline).
