USDA APHIS Updates ASF Response Plans

The United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is pleased to announce significant updates to the African Swine Fever (ASF) response plans for domestic pig and feral swine response. These updates are the result of intensive collaborations between the APHIS ASF Technical Working Group; APHIS programs including Veterinary Services, Wildlife Services, International Services, Plant Protection and Quarantine Preclearance Programs, and Emergency Regulatory and Compliance Services; the ASF Harvest Establishment Working Group, and the United States Animal Health Association Swine Committee.

As AASV opens nominations for the awards to be presented at the 2024 annual meeting, it seems especially appropriate to keep the meeting theme – Leading AASV into the Future – in mind. Do you know a member who has demonstrated exemplary leadership and vision as they carry out their role in practice, tech services, academia, research, or another area? Someone whose actions are benefiting and leading AASV and the swine veterinary profession into the future? Nominate them for one of the following six awards to be presented in Nashville, Tennessee! Position Announcement: Veterinary Medical Officer

This Direct-Hire position is in the Food and Drug Administration and is located in the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of Research, in Laurel, Maryland. The mission of the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is to protect human and animal health. The individual in this role collaborates with Principal Investigators, Staff Scientists, and Animal Care Staff to assist in technical and surgical procedures, as well as postoperative care for animals. They also offer veterinary medical guidance to researchers involved in animal research. This announcement opens on 10/4/2023 and closes 10/18/2023 or to first 100 applicants.

Master of Veterinary Science in Livestock Systems Health Application is Open- Apply now!  

The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine offers an online Master of Veterinary Science (MVS) degree in Livestock Systems Health. The MVS degree is a 32-credit-hour program designed for adult learners. The 16-week courses move at a pace conducive to online learning while giving adult learners opportunities to interact with instructors and classmates through live sessions and virtual office hours. Students should expect to spend 8-10 hours on course materials each week. Applications due October 15.

Students: Applicants sought for Alternate Student Delegate on AASV Board of Directors

The AASV Student Engagement Committee is accepting applications from veterinary students interested in serving as the Alternate Student Delegate on the AASV Board of Directors. This student will represent student interests and serve as a non-voting member of the AASV board. This experience will provide the student with a unique perspective of the inner workings of the AASV. The term of service is 2 years: the first year as alternate student delegate, and the second year as the student delegate.
