SHIC Wean-to-Harvest Biosecurity: New Projects Funded to Investigate Transportation Biosecurity and Cost of Disease in Grow-Finish Production

The Swine Health Information Center’s Wean-to-Harvest Biosecurity Research Program, funded in collaboration with the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research and the Pork Checkoff, has recently funded two new projects to advance biosecurity of US swine farms. The newly funded projects include: 1) an investigation of alternative methods for transport sanitation led by Dr. Erin Kettelkamp at the Swine Vet Center and 2) an assessment of the cost of disease in grow-finish production sites led by Dr. Karyn Havas at Pipestone Research. These awards bring the total number of projects to 18 that have been funded by the program for a comprehensive approach to enhancing biosecurity across the wean-to-harvest phases of swine production.

Position Announcement: Staff Veterinarian

Christensen Farms seeks a Staff Veterinarian who will be responsible for working with the Production Operations Team to develop strategies and process-oriented approaches to improve the health and performance of our swine herd. This position offers the opportunity to develop expertise in all phases of swine production.

People on the Move, New Grad Edition: Dr. Elisha Snezek

AASV welcomes Dr. Elisha (Elise) Snezek to the veterinary profession! Dr. Snezek received her bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Findlay, her Master of Public Health degree from Mercer University, and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Georgia. She has accepted a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position with the Swine Medicine Education Center at Iowa State University, where she will also be completing a graduate degree. Dr. Snezek was raised in Suwanee, Georgia and developed an interest in swine and production animal medicine while completing her undergraduate degree. Her interest in epidemiology and disease prevention grew while completing her master’s degree prior to attending veterinary school. In the summer of 2022, she participated in the Swine Veterinary Internship Program, spending the summer with Tosh Farms, and had the opportunity to present a poster at the 2023 AASV annual meeting. Dr. Snezek is looking forward to taking part in the education of veterinary students and working on research projects while exploring Iowa.
