Former basketball coach John Wooden and swine health leader Paul Sundberg share at least one thing in common. They both define success by “never quite getting there.” Although many would argue both “got there” when it comes to achieving success in their chosen field, Sundberg says that’s what has made his career so fun over the years: always trying to “get there.”

AVMA Releases Resources on Antimicrobial Resistance Susceptibility Testing

Veterinarians have an important role in helping protect antimicrobial effectiveness. One aspect of good antimicrobial stewardship is antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). This can help guide antimicrobial therapy selection and predict outcomes for bacterial infections in animals by determining the sensitivity and resistance of specific pathogens to a wide range of antimicrobial agents.

SHIC 2024 Plan of Work Continues Focus on Protection of US Swine Herd Health

Activities of the Swine Health Information Center are guided by its annual Plan of Work detailing projects to address its five strategic priorities, including 1) improving swine health information, 2) monitoring and mitigating risks to swine health, 3) responding to emerging disease, 4) surveillance and discovery of emerging disease, and 5) swine disease matrices. Developed through stakeholder feedback and approved by the SHIC Board of Directors, the 2024 Plan of Work will be implemented by Executive Director Dr. Megan Niederwerder and Associate Director Dr. Lisa Becton with input from the board and SHIC Working Groups.

Two Acosta Scholars Receive Meeting Attendance Stipends

The AASV Foundation has awarded two $2500 stipends to veterinary students in Mexico to facilitate their attendance at the 2024 AASV Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. The students, Lizbeth Camarena Monjaras and Jose de Jesus Gonzalez Franco, were selected by the Martha Acosta Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the veterinary education of students in Latin America.
