The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, in collaboration with the Center for Food Security and Public Health, is offering regional meetings as part of the Iowa Foreign Animal Disease Defense Program (IFAD) to further develop our state’s Foreign Animal Disease response capabilities. Participating in IFAD enhances Iowa’s ability to detect, respond, mitigate, and recover from FAD outbreaks by training professionals to fulfill these crucial needs. IFAD provides Iowa veterinarians with the right tools to identify FADs, collect appropriate samples, familiarity with reporting, and more.

AASV Foundation-Funded PRRSV Monitoring Research: Final Report
In 2023, the AASV Foundation granted $22,708 to Dr. Daniel Linhares and co-investigators from Iowa State University to partially fund the proposal, “Assessing the performance of tongue tips as an additional tool to monitor PRRSV in breeding herds undergoing virus elimination.” The project is complete and the final report is available.

What Swine Veterinarians Need Most Right Now
Veterinarian Jana Morgan was presented with a unique opportunity 15 years ago to be part of a first-time gathering of young veterinarians in the swine industry. DVM Swine Academy, organized by Boehringer Ingelheim, had one simple goal: to create a peer group for new veterinarians to be able to learn from key opinion leaders in the industry, to discuss issues they were encountering in their careers, and to create a safe environment for them to open up and build their knowledge together.
