AASV Foundation Funded Research: Final Report Available
Dr Daniel Linhares and co-investigators were awarded $21,736 to fund the project, “Assessment of population-based sampling for detection of influenza A virus RNA in breeding herds” in 2022. The project is complete and the final report is available.
SMEC to Hold Four CSSC Trainings
The Swine Medicine Education Center will hold four, two-day training sessions for the Certified Swine Sample Collector program. These trainings will be geared toward individuals with limited swine experience and will include visits to breeding and grow-finish facilities.

Position Announcement: Research Veterinarian
The Research Veterinarian will provide veterinary care for pigs in a designated pathogen-free (DPF) facility. This role plays a critical part in the performance of all veterinary procedures (survival and non-surgeries, sample collection and necropsies) for the xenotransplantation program. The Research Veterinarian will provide routine veterinary care as well as preventive medical care, medical nursing, and euthanasia of the USDA covered species in addition to maintaining the animal health records.
Almond Honored with W.W. Shay Award for Industry Distinction
Glen Almond, professor of Swine Health and Production Management at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, has served the state’s pork industry for more than 35 years, providing clear academic pathways for multiple generations of students who desire veterinary careers in food animal agriculture. For his dedication to his students and to the pork industry, Almond is the 2023 recipient of the North Carolina Pork Council’s W.W. Shay Award for Industry Distinction.
