Position Announcement: Clinical Assistant Professor – Food Animal Diagnostician

The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa invites nominations and applications for a full-time term faculty position at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor in food animal diagnostics in our Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL) is an AAVLD-accredited, full-service laboratory that serves veterinarians and animal owners of the state of Iowa and across the United States. The caseload is diverse with swine representing the large majority of submissions. The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide diagnostic pathology support and deliver comprehensive diagnostic case information on swine and other food animal cases in a concise and well-organized manner on a year-round (12 month) basis to practicing veterinarians and other animal health professionals. The ability to interact, communicate and collaborate with progressive practicing veterinarians and other stakeholders in animal agriculture is essential.

The person in this position will also have a significant role in extension and outreach activities for the VDL providing a variety of value-added services to clients such as data compilation, case series investigations, field investigations, client education programming and wet labs.

The person in this position may also have the opportunity to establish a collaborative research program in areas such as swine infectious disease epidemiology, pathogenesis and control. The successful applicant will also be expected to aid in the development and implementation of new swine diagnostic procedures and assist in maintaining quality assurance programs. The position will also have the opportunity to teach veterinary students in both classroom and laboratory settings and mentor graduate students and residents.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • A combination of two years of experience and education in veterinary diagnostic medicine including advanced training in histopathology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD or equivalent degrees in Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Microbiology, Population Sciences in Animal Health or related fields.
  • Working knowledge and experience with swine production medicine.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with stakeholders in the livestock industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently conduct applied swine infectious disease research.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct veterinary students.
  • Certification in Food Animal Practice, Beef Cattle Practice, or Swine Health Management Practice through the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.
  • Certification in Swine Health Practice through the Executive Veterinary Program.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and training in diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience in a diagnostic laboratory setting.
