The Department of Animal Science of Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, seeks applicants for a 12-month tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position with 50% responsibilities in teaching, 25% in applied research and 25% extension/outreach. We do, however, expect responsibilities in these three areas to be closely supportive of each other. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate swine production science and management courses, advise undergraduate students and student clubs, and provide assistance with undergraduate student recruitment and retention. The candidate is also expected to establish a vigorous and impactful applied research program with a focus on pork production systems and sustainability, along with an associated effective extension program by working closely with the Iowa and US pork industries. Opportunities exist to collaborate with scientists in a variety of disciplines within the Department of Animal Science, Iowa Pork Industry Center and with faculty in other Departments, as well as nearby federal laboratories.
Applicants must have an earned doctorate in an animal science discipline at the time of appointment. The specific disciplinary background is, however, secondary to the candidate’s potential to establish effective and impactful integrated teaching, research, and extension programs. Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills is required. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated (1) teaching effectiveness, (2) applied research effectiveness, (3) ability to develop and deliver extension education programs in pork production and management systems, (4) ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment to solve problems, (5) ability to secure extramural funding and (6) extensive knowledge of the pork production industry.
