Position Announcement: Director of Producer and Public Health

The National Pork Board, located in Clive, Iowa, seeks a Director of Producer and Public Health to serve in the Department of Science and Technology.

NATURE OF POSITION:

The Director of Producer and Public Health will be responsible for the development and implementation of research and programming related to zoonotic disease, antimicrobial use/resistance, occupational health and safety and other pork producer and public health issues related to pork production and works closely with the Director of Pork Safety to address pork related food-borne disease issues. This includes the development and delivery of educational material for producers, liaison with veterinarians and technical advice with respect to regulatory oversight of these issues. Additional responsibilities may be assigned related to emerging public health or other relevant issues.

The Director of Producer and Public Health will participate in long range planning with regard to producer and public health research, education and programs and works with Producer Outreach in the development and delivery of materials and programs to producers. In addition, the Director of Producer and Public Health will provide information as requested by staff and other stakeholders in these areas.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

  1. Education: DVM with a MPH or other advanced degree in a related field preferred.
  2. Skills: Ability to communicate orally and in written form with producers, veterinarians, government officials and other professionals; ability to translate veterinary medical terms and situations for producers and other audiences.
  3. Relevant Experience: Two years or the equivalent in the practice of swine veterinary medicine or public health practice and/or additional education in a related field.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Staff Management and Leadership: Consultation and support to other National Pork Board departments and task forces as needed. Shares supervision of one administrative support person.
  • Supervision Received: Is mostly independent on a daily basis and evaluated based on results.
  • Travel: Requires moderate travel (up to 30%), both nationally and internationally. Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record.
