Brazilian agriculture officials have reported an outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in a swine herd located in Maranhao.
The outbreak, affecting a herd of 35 animals between 60 and 120 days of age, has resulted in 12 clinical cases and 12 deaths since first observed on August 14, 2008. The disease was confirmed on September 25 at the National Laboratory by virus isolation. CSF was last reported in Brazil in January, 2007.
Control measures have been implemented although vaccination is prohibited. Affected animals will be destroyed and the premises disinfected. Movement controls, including quarantines and zoning, have been enacted to minimize the risk of disease spread.
