Colorado state lawmakers are considering legislation that would require that calves raised for veal and gestating sows must be able to stand up, lie down and turn around without touching the sides of their pens.
Sen. Jim Isgar introduced the bill in an effort to thwart plans by animal rights groups pursuing a ballot initiative with stricter regulations. Violators of the proposed legislation could be charged with a misdemeanor and face a penalty of up to 12 months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
