Pig Genetic Marker Technology Available to All

Genetic markers significantly associated with growth, leanness and meat quality are now available to all U.S. pork producers.

The Iowa State University Research Foundation has signed a licensing agreement with GeneSeek of Lincoln, Neb., that licenses the use of DNA markers in four genes, all of which have been tested and commercially validated.

The first gene marker is MC4R and it controls growth and leanness. The second marker is PRKAG3, which allows the selection of animals with high pH and meat color. The third gene marker is CAST, which affects tenderness and meat quality. The fourth one is HMGA1, which is highly associated with backfat and lean growth. The effect of these is additive and these genes can be maximized by using them in combination.

Future gene marker targets include finding answers to pigs’ ability to resist or better tolerate disease agents. For more, go to http://www.porkmag.com.
