FMD Outbreak in Israel ? Update

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has now been identified in a cattle herd in Mevo Hamma, Golan, Hazafon according to a report filed with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The disease was diagnosed in a herd of 210 1 – 8 month old calves resulting in 15 clinical cases and 5 deaths. The affected animals are 1 – 3 month old unvaccinated calves. The older calves are vaccinated and not clinically affected.

The previously reported outbreak in goats was diagnosed as FMD serotype O by the National FMD Laboratory at the Kimron Veterinary Institute. The serotyping results for this report in cattle have not been released. Pictures of the lesions observed in the affected cattle are available online (see page 3). The OIE report includes a map showing the location of the outbreak. Movement controls, quarantines and vaccination have been implemented to control the spread of the disease.
