Fort Dodge Licenses New PCV2 Vaccine

Fort Dodge Animal Health announced the licensure of SuvaxynTM PCV2 One Dose during the World Pork Expo.

The inactivated, one-dose vaccine for piglets 4 weeks of age and older was developed in collaboration with researchers at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The vaccine is labeled to aid in the prevention of Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2) viremia and control of lymphoid depletion caused by PCV2.

According to the company, the vaccine utilizes a non-pathogenic strain of a related virus, PCV1, to produce a chimeric virus that expresses the immunogenic antigen of the disease-causing PCV2. Animal studies conducted at ISU indicate that the vaccine induces protective immunity against PCV2 while retaining the non-pathogenic characteristics of PCV1.
