FMD Confirmed in Gansu Province in China

The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed that 11 cattle have contracted Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). The cattle are located in Zhangye in Gansu Province in western China.

Initial signs of the disease were observed on March 1, 2006. The outbreak was identified as FMD serotype Asia 1 by an official laboratory. Susceptible animals on surrounding farms have been inoculated.

An additional outbreak was reported on March 12th in the village of Dayu in northwestern Qinghai Province which is adjacent to Gansu Province. Nineteen cattle and two pigs have been culled in response to the disease which was confirmed by the state laboratory on March 4th.
