Classical Swine Fever (CSF, Hog Cholera) has been diagnosed on a swine farm in Cuitegi, Paraiba, Brazil according to Dr. Jorge Caetano Junior, Director, Department of Animal Protection (DDA), Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, Brazil.
The affected pigs range in age from 66 to 120 days old. At last report, 66 of the 131 susceptible animals were affected and 46 had died. The diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, post-mortem examinations and laboratory confirmation at the National Agricultural Laboratory (LANAGRO-PE), Recife, Pernambuco. Diagnostics performed included ELISA, virus isolation and direct immunofluorescence.
Control measures including quarantine, zoning and stamping out are being undertaken.
