Endemic FMD in China may be Spreading into Russia

China officially confirmed outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and eastern China’s Jiangsu Province. Ten previous outbreaks of FMD serotype Asia 1 were reported to OIE during 2005 indicating that the disease may be endemic in numerous Chinese provinces.

Recent reports indicate outbreaks in Russia along its border with eastern China. Laboratory confirmation and identification of the FMD viral serotype has not yet been undertaken. Russian authorities have announced plans for joint Russian-Chinese veterinary investigations into the spread of the virus along the border.
