Position Announcement: Veterinary Medical Officer

This Direct-Hire position is in the Food and Drug Administration and is located in the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of Research, in Laurel, Maryland. The mission of the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is to protect human and animal health. The individual in this role collaborates with Principal Investigators, Staff Scientists, and Animal Care Staff to assist in technical and surgical procedures, as well as postoperative care for animals. They also offer veterinary medical guidance to researchers involved in animal research. This announcement opens on 10/4/2023 and closes 10/18/2023 or to first 100 applicants.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities at the GS-12 grade level:

  • Provide clinical support for animals used in research activities and assist in technical procedures, surgical procedures, postoperative care, and the use of anesthetics and analgesics for animals.
  • Provide guidance on surgical and postoperative measures.
  • Engage in collaborative discussions with other scientist on the development and implementation of the techniques used by a clinical care veterinarian.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current topics, technological advances, and alternative methods in the field of veterinary science and regulatory veterinary science.

Responsibilities at the GS-13 grade level:

  • Work with Principal Investigators, Staff Scientist, and Animal Care Staff in technical procedures, surgical procedures, postoperative care, and the use of anesthetics and analgesics for animals.
  • Provide veterinary medical support and advice to researchers who are performing research with animals.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current topics, technological advances, and alternative methods in the field of veterinary science and regulatory veterinary science.
  • Engage in collaborative discussion with other scientist on the development and implementation of the techniques used by a clinical care veterinarian.
