Position Announcement: Tenure-Track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor – Swine Production Medicine

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is seeking applications for a full-time tenure track faculty appointment in the area of Swine Production Medicine in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine in Ames, Iowa.

The successful candidate will join a department with over 50 food animal focused faculty and 150 staff. This position will commit approximately 50-75% effort toward teaching, 10-20% effort towards professional practice and outreach,10-15% towards research and 1-2% towards institutional service. The primary focus for all aspects of the position will be on swine production medicine.

The successful candidate will have substantial responsibilities developing curriculum, maintaining compliance with university administrative policies, effectively adopting teaching technologies, and teaching both onsite and on-line didactic courses as well as on-farm clinical courses related to swine production medicine. The candidate will be actively engaged in teaching, the scholarship of teaching and learning, clinical research focused on teaching efficacy, and outreach activities through the Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC). Responsibilities will include providing professional veterinary services to the University swine farms including support of live animal research activities. Activities may include a full range of swine veterinary medicine service to referring veterinarians and clients throughout Iowa.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Veterinary Population Sciences or a closely related field
  • Evidence of experience conducting clinical research related to swine production medicine, especially teaching techniques or outcomes
  • State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before first day of employment
  • DEA licensing on or before first day of employment

In addition to the requirements above, below are minimum qualifications at the following ranks:

  • ASSOCIATE: a solid academic reputation and show promise of further development and productivity in their academic career
  • FULL PROFESSOR: recognized by their professional peers within the university, as well as nationally/internationally, for the quality of the contribution to their discipline

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in an AVMA accredited training program
  • Experience providing progressive swine focused veterinary medicine in a private practice or swine production company
  • Certification by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Swine Health Management practice
  • Experience with the following software programs: Canvas, including CidiLabs editing package; Canvas Studio including SCORM compliant modules; Camtasia; R (statistical software); StudyMate; Microsoft Visio; Microsoft Publisher; AnimalDrugs@FDA; NLM/NCBI searches using Boolean operators
  • Experience contributing to and enhancing the excellence in diversity and inclusion of the academic community through research and/or teaching

Department and College Description

VDPAM was created in 1997 to strategically grow the resources and emphasis in production animal medicine at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine. VDPAM consists of approximately 55 faculty and 150 staff and includes the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL). The ISU VDL sees approximately 70,000 swine cases annually. The Swine Medicine Section in VDPAM is the largest species specific group in the department and brings together a diversity of research, teaching, professional practice and extension expertise in a synergistic and culturally diverse environment. The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) in VDPAM has a primary teaching mission that impacts more than 50% of the US swine herd. Students from over 101 countries utilized SMEC resources, participated in on-line training or traveled to Ames, Iowa to take clinical courses on regional farms.
