Qualifications

  • Must have a DVM from accredited school
  • 3 years of swine medicine experience
  • Must have veterinary accreditation completed and maintain accreditation
  • Be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania

Job Description

  • Work with all sow unit flows’ health protocols and procedures
  • Oversee the health program of sows, gilts, nurseries, and finishers (all life stages of swine)
  • Maintain biosecurity and help increase level of awareness around this topic
  • Maintain genetic multiplication flow testing requirements and CVI papers
  • Make medical decisions based on diagnostic information, current trends in the industry, and what is best for the pig.
  • Work on any updates needed on vaccinations throughout the entire system
  • Help with any sow unit trainings as decided upon.
  • Help train, work with the multiple service team members throughout the state (Be available for follow up calls as needed)
  • Travel to and investigate any problem barns
  • Determine any VFD plans and communicate with team
  • Help ensure gilt multiplication barns are being tested for any upcoming replacement sales
  • Monthly herd visits and testing at the 3 owned sow units
  • Investigate and track antimicrobial/antibiotic usage
  • Help with any trial work that we would like to research
  • Review, summarize, and communicate with owners on diagnostic results
  • Present at training meetings for service team, truck drivers, contract growers, etc. (There are two contract grower meetings each year)
  • Be available for weekly conference calls
  • Set up meetings with pharmaceutical companies and help with negotiation of pricing and trials, etc.
  • Provide timely update communications to the owners on what is going on within the system.
  • Help update the Ohio Pork Council – PRRS/PED mapping file – updated monthly
  • Help maintain and initiate USSHIP/SPS/Agview programs

Weekly expectations

  • Monday – Friday work week – occasional Saturday if need to catch up
  • First part of week – more central Ohio barns – sow units and gilt multiplication finishers due to high health status
  • Work with service team on barns needing visits – diagnostic workup, etc
  • Western Ohio – end of the week due to high pig density and disease pressure (May be longer days due to travel time)
