Position Announcement: Research Veterinarian

CBSRI is seeking an enthusiastic Research Veterinarian to lead the Procedural Core of the center’s operations with biomedical swine.

The mission of the Center for Biomedical Swine Research and Innovation (CBSRI) is to innovate and accelerate the discovery and development of therapies and technologies that change human lives. CBSRI creates, validates, and utilizes porcine biomedical models to translate benchtop research into clinically relevant solutions. Working with a dynamic team of faculty, staff and students, the Research Veterinarian will manage and participate in the day-to-day research activities of the Procedural Core, including developing anesthesia and surgical approaches, neonatal care, and novel research techniques for use in porcine models. The Research Veterinarian will also collaborate with clinical veterinarians, anesthesiologists and veterinary technicians who oversee the university’s overall research animal program, as well as with experts in swine reproduction, husbandry, and welfare. We are looking for an individual who has a hands-on approach to problem-solving, strong leadership skills and the drive to build close-knit and enthusiastic teams to do great things.

CBSRI encompasses one of the nation’s top biomedical swine programs with outstanding infrastructure, research experts, and resources. Our multi-disciplinary center is a partnership between the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) and the UW Biotechnology Center, working in collaboration with several other centers and units across the UW-Madison campus from biotechnology to state-of-the-art medical imaging. UW has four animal facilities in which swine are housed, including a 1,500 pig capacity breeding facility.

Primary Duties Include:

  • Performing experimental procedures, anesthesia support and post-operative care for swine
  • Providing support for porcine reproductive cloning and neonatal care
  • Development of novel surgical or procedural approaches
  • Consulting on procedural planning and protocol development
  • Supervision and training of procedural team members
  • Oversee coordination of project timeline and staff support
  • Oversee compliance, including: animal/biosafety protocol adherence, medical records and controlled drug use
  • Providing consultation or contributing to grant proposals and scientific manuscripts

Some after-hours and weekend work will be required. Travel between the various UW animal facilities will be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • DVM – Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Required; Incumbent must be eligible to obtain veterinary licensure in Wisconsin
  • Experience with large animal anesthesia
  • Experience with biomedical research
  • Must be able to obtain clearance to work with select agents

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with swine, including animal handling, injections, blood collection, surgical procedures, and anesthesia support
  • Experience with supervision and/or training staff in clinical procedures
  • 2+ years of experience in biomedical animal research
  • Board eligibility or certification in swine clinical specialty is highly desirable
