Position Announcement: Veterinary Medical Officer (Pathology)

This Veterinary Medical Officer position serves as a section pathologist and has the primary responsibility to provide diagnostic veterinary pathology expertise in support of U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, and Veterinary Services programs.

Duties

  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides diagnostic pathology support for transmissible spongiform encephalopathy surveillance.
  • Provides diagnostic pathology support for the diagnosis of foreign animal diseases and animal diseases of unusual nature and/or severity that threaten U.S. livestock.
  • Provides diagnostic pathology support for the eradication/control of bovine tuberculosis.
  • Participates on a team of specially trained Foreign Animal Disease Diagnosticians available on a 24-hour basis to be immediately transported to the site of animal disease suspected of foreign origin.
  • Participates in planning and implementation of training schools, lectures, seminars, bench training, and demonstrations for various other scientific personnel.
  • Prepares and presents information ranging from basic pathology to newly applied techniques and procedures for scientific meetings.
  • Participates in development and/or application of new diagnostic pathology techniques that support disease eradication/control programs.
  • Participates in quality assurance activities for the Pathology section.
