2022-2023 AABP Manage Your Rural Practice for Success Workshops

The American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Veterinary Practice Sustainability (VPS) committee applied for and received a USDA-NIFA grant to fund practice management workshops. These workshops are available to any veterinarian, less than 10 years in practice, who is at least 10% food animal. Preference is given to those in designated shortage areas. AABP membership is not required for application.

The workshops are tailored for recent veterinary graduates who are looking to buy/build a practice, those needing help understanding practice finances, and those needing more instruction on human resources management.

The grant will fund four Year One workshops (two in 2022, two in 2023) and four Year Two workshops (two in 2023, two in 2024) for 15 practitioners each during the next three years. These workshops are accretive and involve a commitment over a two-year period. Successful applicants will be required to complete pre-workshop assignments prior to each workshop. Eligibility criteria includes US citizens who are practicing veterinarians with at least 10% of revenues from food animal species who graduated from veterinary school from 2012-2021. Priority points are assigned to veterinarians who are owners, have access to practice financial data, and are working in USDA designated shortage areas.

Applicants who meet the criteria and are selected to attend in-person will be awarded a $900 stipend for each of the two workshops in the series ($1800 total) to offset the cost of hotel and travel expenses. Additionally, there is no registration fee for the workshops for those applicants who meet the grant criteria and are selected. A limited number of seats are available at each workshop for a second person from the applicant’s practice or a financial advisor/manager to attend for a fee of $300 with no travel stipend awarded for the second person. The workshops will be submitted for RACE approval and a CE certificate will be provided to those who attend.
