The University of Minnesota, Veterinary Population Medicine Department (VPM), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking to hire an outstanding candidate for a 100% Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (contract) position in the area of Veterinary Public Health. We define Veterinary Public Health in the broadest sense – the health of animals, humans, and the environment, sometimes called One Health. Collectively, this position will directly leverage internationally recognized teaching, research, and outreach programs at the CVM and School of Public Health (SPH), with opportunities to collaborate with other CVM divisions (Ruminant, Swine, Poultry, One Health) and several university centers including the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) and the Food Protection and Defense Institute (FPDI).
The VPM Department has a long history of internationally recognized programs in veterinary public health, epidemiology, infectious disease ecology, disease prevention and management, animal genetics and microbiome metagenomics, and preventive medicine relevant to animals (poultry, swine, dairy, wildlife and aquatic species) and One Health. Several key faculty divisions and centers, including the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety and traditional livestock and poultry health divisions (Ruminant, Swine, and Poultry), support scholarly partnerships with state and federal governments, and livestock and food-related industries; while the One Health division supports the integration of environmental and human/animal health sciences toward the sustainable use of natural resources to support animal, human, and environmental health. Finally, the Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory provides diagnostic services that support both human and animal health.
The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota is part of a comprehensive network of health-related colleges and the College of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resource Sciences and is located in a major metropolitan area and state capital city near the offices of the Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Board of Animal Health, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and United States Department Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS). Uniquely, the College of Veterinary Medicine works in collaboration with animal producers and veterinary organizations in the care, management and well-being of large populations of dairy cattle, swine, poultry, and wildlife.
Requirements
- DVM/VMD (or equivalent foreign degree).
- Advanced degree MS, MPH and/or PhD in area related to veterinary public health.
- Experience and be committed to teaching, mentoring and/or training of DVM students, graduate students, fellows, and/or employees.
- Commitment to veterinary public health research.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Experience working effectively within teams.
- Experience participating in public-private partnerships related to veterinary public health, including with state government partners, federal agencies, and/or other organizations and companies.
Preferred
- Board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.
- Documented research record, as evidenced by funded research grants/contracts and publications related to veterinary public health.
- Experience in teaching veterinary public health.
- Experience implementing infection prevention and control programs and/or other veterinary public health programs in clinical settings (i.e occupational, environmental, impact of climate change on health, etc)
- Documented history of successfully completed veterinary public health projects working with state and federal agencies and/or other organizations and companies.
- USDA APHIS Veterinary Accreditation.
- Demonstrated record of incorporating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in programs relevant to public health
Duties/responsibilities
- Teaching of veterinary public health to DVM students, including the Zoonoses and food safety course and the Veterinary Public Health rotation, along with other assigned teaching.
- Teaching and mentoring dual degree DVM/MPH students, Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine (VPHPM) Residents and/or other graduate students
- Research in veterinary public health areas of focus.
- Coordinate and participate in outreach in veterinary public health areas of focus for community and K-12 educational partners.
- Support scholarly activities of the VPHPM Residency Program and the Veterinary Medical Center hospital Infection Control Program.
- Partnerships with external public-private partners involved with veterinary public health including the Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Board of Animal Health, and USDA APHIS, Department of Natural Resources, commodity groups, industry partners, among others.
- Other duties as assigned, which may include service to the College and the University.
Salary and Start-up Package
Highly competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. The University offers an excellent benefits package.
