The Center for Food Security and Public Health (CFSPH) at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applications for two positions: a Postdoc Research Associate and a Public Health Veterinarian/Lead Public Health Veterinarian. 1. Post-doc Research Associate
The CFSPH seeks a Post-doc Research Associate with a DVM and expertise in swine and/or bovine production medicine to develop complex or specialized materials to address issues related to animal health, transboundary diseases and emergency preparedness, including Secure Food Supply Plans.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop and deliver educational resources, training modules, and other outreach materials for the public, producers, veterinarians and emergency response officials. This will prepare the candidate for a career in academia or industry. The term of employment initially offered will be one year, and may be extended up to five years subject to funding and satisfactory job performance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An advanced academic degree in Public Health, Population Medicine, or related field.
- Experience writing and presenting complex information to veterinarians.
- Expertise or focus in swine and/or bovine production medicine or public health.

2. Public Health Veterinarian/Lead Public Health Veterinarian
The CFSPH is seeking two Public Health Veterinarians and/or Lead Public Health Veterinarians with expertise in swine and/or bovine production medicine or public health to develop highly complex or specialized materials to address issues related to animal health, transboundary diseases and emergency preparedness, including Secure Food Supply Plans and public health.
Example of Duties
- Researches literature and produces scientific, technical writing in areas of swine and/or bovine health and production, infectious diseases, public health and emergency preparedness.
- Develops training modules, web-based materials or other media for scientific presentations and the general public.
- Prepares materials that promote local, state and national-scale emergency response and disease control.
- Liaises with state, federal and industry organizations regarding animal health needs.
- Delivers public presentations related to the topics above.
Level Guidelines
- Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals
- Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
- Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
- Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
- Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
- May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
- May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
- Provides guidance to students
These positions may be hired as a Public Health Veterinarian or as a Lead Public Health Veterinarian. The initial term will be for one year, but will be renewable based on performance and funding availability.
Minimum qualifications for a Public Health Veterinarian
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent and 5 years of related experience
- Pay Grade: PS811
Minimum qualifications for a Lead Public Health Veterinarian*
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent and 8 years of related experience
