Don’t miss these wellbeing sessions and activities offered during the AASV Annual Meeting!

General Session: Your Right and Responsibility to Be Well, Monday March 1, 12:00-12:30pm CT
Dr. Elizabeth Strand, a licensed clinical social worker, resiliency coach, and Founding Director of Veterinary Social Work at the University of Tennessee, offers advice on how we can take care of ourselves so that we can offer support and encouragement to others.

Wellness Breaks
Take 15 minutes to learn a new skill to practice your right and responsibility to be well during your break times.

  • Mindfulness Break – Sunday Feb 28, 3:00-3:15pm CT
Enjoy 15 minutes of mindfulness practice using the skill of counting your breaths 1-10.
  • Breath, Body, Mind Break – Monday March 1, 3:45-4:00pm CT
This 15-minute session will consist of slow tai chi like movements and paced breathing for finding a healthy pace in body and thinking.
  • Coherent Breathing Break – Tuesday March 2, 10:00-10:15am CT
This 15-minute session will be a practice of coherent breathing: equal breath in and out at 5.5 breaths per minute pacing with the sound of some bells.

HEARD VET: Swine Vet Peer Social Support Group, Monday March 1, 5:45-6:45pm CT
During this 25-minute virtual peer support meeting, you will use a structured six question debrief protocol. You will benefit from and offer support by listening to others and answering the following questions honestly.

  1. What have you been thinking about while you are supposed to be relaxing, sleeping, or spending time in hobbies or with loved ones. (i.e. is there something you can’t quite shake or is bothering your peace of mind).
  2. What did you do well in that situation or circumstance?
  3. What do you wish you had done differently?
  4. What did you learn from the experience?
  5. Is there any change you need to implement to your approach in the future based on this experience?
  6. Is there anything that you feel grateful for in this situation or generally?

Come to this safe place to talk about your unique experiences as a swine veterinarian, share how your week has been, get advice if you want it, give advice if you have it, and invest in the strength of yours and others’ resilience. Dr. Strand will serve as a trained facilitator.
