Students – AASV is Hiring!

Are you an exceptional student with a strong interest in swine health and welfare, emergency preparedness and response, and human wellbeing? Consider spending your summer with AASV in a paid internship! Apply by December 21, 2020, 8:00 am CT.

Description:
This full-time 12- to 14-week 2021 summer internship, with a flexible start in the spring, will focus on lessons learned from the swine industry’s response to COVID-19. You will be asked to help develop supplemental education resources to be used during emergency response, including decision making tools, equipment lists, recordkeeping forms, and team debriefing tools to assist swine veterinarians and farmers before and after an event occurs.

Learning Opportunities:
This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your communication skills, network with other swine veterinarians, and develop critical tools to help pigs, farmers, and veterinarians during the next emergency. There is potential to submit this project for consideration for the veterinary student abstract competition associated with the 2022 AASV Annual Meeting.

Location:
Remote. This is a computer-based position, so the ability to work diligently and independently is a must.

Compensation:
$13.75/hour

Requirements:

  • Veterinary students preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational skills
  • Results-oriented, with a high drive to meet goals
  • Ability to manage time with a commitment to meet deadlines and frequently communicate with others involved in the project
  • Ability to work independently and remotely with little supervision
  • Ability to be proactive and creative
  • Ability to work as a team
  • Willingness to learn with an open mind
  • Access to a computer with video conferencing capabilities (i.e., speaker and webcam) and internet

  • A 1-2 page cover letter explaining:
    • Previous experience with swine, pork producers, and/or agriculture.
    • Your career interests
    • Why this project and position interests you and what you would like to gain from the experience.
    • Available hours per week; planned time off due to previous commitments
  • A short description (max 300 words) of your understanding of how COVID-19 has impacted the swine industry and the veterinary profession.
