People on the Move: Dr. Gil Patterson

Dr. Gil Patterson has recently taken a position as the Chief Medical Officer of Food Animal Services for the veterinary telehealth company, VetNOW. Previously, Dr. Patterson worked at the Center for Animal and Human Health in Appalachia (CAHA), a One Health-focused educational outreach and research organization within Lincoln Memorial University, College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM), in Harrogate, Tennessee. Dr. Patterson brings his experience in veterinary public health, academia, and swine practice to integrate VetNOW’s telehealth platform with the needs of food animal veterinarians and their clients.

Following graduation from veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania in 2011, Dr. Patterson moved to Minnesota where he worked as a swine veterinarian with the Swine Vet Center. Dr. Patterson left practice in 2014 and began a residency in Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the University of Minnesota, Center for Animal Health and Food Safety. During the course of his residency, he earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, and became a diplomat in the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM). While working at LMU-CVM, Dr. Patterson developed a course for veterinary students interested in rural veterinary practice, and conducted numerous research projects to support the needs of veterinarians in rural areas. Through these experiences, Dr. Patterson recognized the growing need for telehealth solutions designed specifically for veterinarians in rural areas and in food animal practice. He is actively working with his team at VetNOW to develop VCPR-compliant virtual care solutions to improve animal health, food safety, and veterinarian productivity. He will remain at LMU-CVM as an adjunct professor and will continue teaching swine and public health topics to veterinary students. Dr. Patterson also represents the interests of AASV, and serves as Chair of the AVMA’s Food Safety Advisory Committee (FSAC).
