Smithfield Foods seeks a swine veterinarian based in Iowa to promote animal health and wellbeing, with a focus on disease prevention and process improvement, in order to improve the health of the system.
Responsibilities and requirements of this position include:
- Ability to monitor and evaluate key performance indicators and formulate intervention strategies to improve system health.
- Evaluate and enhance biosecurity within modern commercial swine finishing and sow systems.
- Examine animals to determine nature of disease or injury and determine treatment strategies.
- Develop and evaluate routine testing for herd health evaluation
- Develop strategies to reduce impact of diseases and other disorders.
- Ensure that animals meet all federal, state, and local health and welfare regulations.
- Advise and teach employees/caretakers about sanitary measures, feeding, and general care to promote health and welfare of animals.
- Promote teamwork within all production segments to focus on system mission.
- Oversee and provide guidance for animal health regulatory issues associated with production and movement of swine.
- Evaluate new technologies/products/processes and the impact on production and animal health.
- Establish and maintain relationships for Smithfield, dba Murphy-Brown LLC with academics, animal health organizations and political/health organizations.
- Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield, dba Murphy Brown LLC subscribes.
- Report all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor.
- Read and understand the company’s emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their work site.
- Responsible for being in compliance with all animal welfare laws and procedures to which Smithfield, dba Murphy-Brown LLC subscribes.
- Incumbent will be responsible for understanding and complying with company EMS policies and procedures in the performance of their job duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned by manager.
Education and Additional Requirements:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited school. Must currently be or be willing to become licensed in Iowa and surrounding states.
- Must have 2-5 years post graduate experience. Swine production experience, leadership experience, and/or Master of Science degree preferred.
- Current and valid driver’s license with acceptable MVR
- Proven working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Access to internet is preferred.
- Must be available for domestic travel, which may include overnight stays.
- Must be available to work nights and weekends when necessary.
