Position Announcement: Director of Environmental Science

The National Pork Board (NPB) is seeking an experienced results-oriented person who can competently direct, lead, manage and communicate a cross-disciplinary environmental research strategy for the U.S. Pork Checkoff’s Environmental Science strategy.

This person will need to work and collaborate with pork producers, NPB Leadership, the NPB Environmental Committee, State Pork Associations and the U.S. pork industry to aggressively identify and manage pork industry environmental opportunities and risks.

The Director of Environmental Science will manage the environmental strategy, programming, projects and research by coordinating, communicating, and developing relationships with the Environmental Science research and technical expertise communities. This person will assess and respond to pork producer identified needs and will coordinate with the State Pork Associations to determine their needs. The Director of Environmental Science will be required to develop, lead, manage and communicate a cross-disciplinary environmental research strategy for the pork industry.

Applicants should have:

  1. Seven to ten years’ experience in the agricultural environmental regulatory/public policy arena;
  2. Basic and applied environmental science experience in the following areas: agronomy/soils, manure/nutrient management, water quality and odor;
  3. Experience and ability to develop, recommend, manage and execute environmental research strategies based on input from a wide-range of stakeholders;
  4. Knowledge of the interface of public health and the environment;
  5. Proven ability to quickly read, analyze and concisely summarize technical information, such as environmental and economic models, and assist with development of communication messaging for a wide range of audiences;
  6. Proven ability to build lasting professional relationships and work collaboratively as part of an industry team, while being a driver of industry needs.

A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in environmental science, agricultural or environmental engineering, biology, agronomy, food animal production, environmental management or related discipline. Advanced degrees encouraged.

Experience in agricultural association policies/practices preferred.

This position will require up to 30% percent domestic and international travel via air and ground and requires a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Must have a valid US Passport and ability to obtain a VISA in all relevant international countries.
