Position Announcement: Postdoctoral Research Associate

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (ISU CVM) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Associate in the Veterinary Field Services Unit in Ambulatory Medicine within the department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM).

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Emphasis of this position will be on bovine (dairy and beef) with exposure to other food animal species. The primary roles of this position are to provide veterinary care to the unit’s clientele, conduct applied research, and to assist in the instruction of veterinary students within the department’s professional program. Responsibilities will include being on-call and providing emergency services. This position will allow the individual to pursue board certification as a Dairy, Beef, or Food Animal Diplomate with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) and/or a graduate degree (MS or PhD).

The person in this position will gain production medicine-based clinical and applied research experience, while working with clients of the ISU Veterinary Field Services unit, ISU Food Animal and Camelid Hospital, and the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

The person(s) selected for this position will be formally and informally trained in the latest tools and techniques in applied research processes and approaches specific to bovine medicine, and will learn to conduct field investigations of disease outbreaks to support veterinarians and producers in the United States.

This is a one-year renewable appointment with up to 5 total years to complete board certification and/or graduate degree requirements.

Required Education and Experience

  • Graduation from an AVMA accredited veterinary college by September 1, 2017
  • Veterinary licensure or eligibility for licensure in the State of Iowa
  • Category II veterinary accreditation under the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program or eligibility for accreditation by the USDA
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Demonstrated focus on bovine medicine

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Two plus years bovine practice or related experience

Required Licensure(s)/Certification(s)

State of Iowa Veterinary License and Category II veterinary accreditation under the USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program or eligibility for accreditation by the USDA on or before the first day of employment.
