Position Announcement: Department Head, Large Animal Clinical Science

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Science in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech seeks a creative and visionary leader for the position of Department Head. The Department of Large Animal Clinical Science has three major missions common to land-grant institutions: deliver excellent professional and graduate veterinary medical education, provide veterinary service to clients and the agricultural industries through exceptional patient care that protects both animal and human health, and advance medical knowledge through research and scholarship.

The Department Head will provide leadership and management of all departmental academic, research and service activities and will serve on the College Executive Board. This entails supervision of faculty and staff, administrative responsibility for planning, fiscal management, human resources and communication. The Department Head is also expected to advance the research, teaching and diagnostic service missions of the department, nurture interdisciplinary collaboration and work toward the strategic goals of the department, college, and university. In addition to departmental leadership responsibilities, the Head is expected to contribute personally to the research, teaching and/or service missions of the Department.

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Science has 22 faculty members at the Blacksburg campus and 6 faculty members at the Equine Medical Center, a premier full-service equine hospital located in Leesburg, Virginia. The department has residency and internship programs in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Blacksburg and the Equine Medical Center in Leesburg.

Required Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • Diplomate of an AVMA recognized specialty College or similar internationally recognized governing body
  • Demonstrated achievement in teaching, service, and research/scholarship
  • Administrative experience, exceptional communication skills, and leadership qualities that facilitate and encourage engagement and faculty development
  • A scholarship record sufficient to be eligible for tenure as a professor in the Department
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in an academic environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced graduate degree
  • Direct experience with veterinary medical education
  • Interest and/or experience in mentoring of students
  • Ability to work in a high-tech environment consistent with computer-aided instruction and distance learning
