Position Announcement: Staff Veterinarian, Smithfield Hog Production

Smithfield Hog Production is seeking a staff veterinarian to join the East Central Region management team. This position offers the opportunity to work with a team of experienced production directors, managers, and contract growers. Responsibilities will involve promoting herd health, animal care, and food safety in all phases of pork production on operations located in or near Duplin County, North Carolina.

Summary:

Promotes process improvement with a focus on disease prevention in order to improve the health of the system. Diagnoses and treats diseases of swine by performing the following duties.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited school and be or become licensed in North Carolina
  • 2-4 years post graduate experience, swine production/leadership or Masters of Science preferred
  • Current and valid drivers license with acceptable MVR
  • Proven working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Access, Internet is preferred.

Duties:

  • Must be available for occasional travel
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends when necessary
  • Monitors key indicators and formulate intervention strategies to improve system health
  • Examines animals to determine nature of disease or injury
  • Treats animal surgically or medically
  • Test animals for herd health monitoring
  • Inoculates animals against diseases and other disorders. Ensures that animals meet all federal, state, and local health and welfare regulations
  • Advises/teaches managers/employees about sanitary measures, feeding, and general care to promote health of animals
  • Promotes teamwork with all production segments to focus on system mission
  • Oversees and provides guidance for animal health regulatory issues associated with production and movement of swine
  • Evaluates new technologies/products as they impact production and animal health
  • Establishes and maintains relationships for Smithfield Hog Production with academics, animal health organizations and political/health organizations
  • Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production subscribes
  • Be committed to the judicious use of antimicrobials.
  • Report all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor
  • Read and understand the company’s emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their work site
  • Responsible for being in compliance with all animal welfare laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production subscribes
  • Incumbent will be responsible for understanding and complying with company EMS policies and procedures in the performance of their job duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned by manager
