Position Announcement: Swine Veterinarian

Smithfield Hog Production Division is seeking a Swine Veterinarian who will be heavily involved with an APP eradication project at the Utah operation. The operation, located in beautiful southern Utah, is a 75,000 sow operation farrow to finish with 60 farm sites. This position will promote process improvement with a focus on health, disease prevention and biosecurity. Competitive pay and amazing benefits are offered. Summary of Essential Job Responsibilities:

Manage the health monitoring of a 75,000 sow depopulation/repopulation project. Work with staff to ensure proper sample collection, preparation, submission and data analysis. Work with diagnostic labs to verify false positive samples. Perform post mortem examinations to monitor health of the breeding project. Promote process improvement with a focus on health, disease prevention and biosecurity for the success of this project. Educate all departments, associates and vendors on existing and new biosecurity protocols

  • Provide real-time on-site veterinary support to all aspects of swine production.
  • Ensure communication, efforts and activities are aligned with the direction of the production team’s goals and are directed toward system-wide optimization.
  • Lead and direct system practices to ensure animal movement and testing requirements are being completed consistent with state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure both the pork industry and Company objectives, standards, and initiatives are carried out at the regional level including administration of health plans, disease/pathogen monitoring, PQA/TQA measures, food safety, and animal welfare policy.
  • Provide timely, accurate reports, documentation and data to internal/external customers.
  • Monitor current and new system health and food safety regulations to ensure our compliance.
  • Monitor production capabilities to ensure optimum performance standards through biosecurity, system design, health improvement initiatives, and genetics.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with academics, animal health organizations and political/health organizations
  • Evaluate new technologies/products as they impact production and animal health

Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
  • Able and willing to get licensure in Utah and Idaho
  • One to three years of postgraduate experience in swine medicine preferred
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and analytical skills
  • Intermediate computer skills especially with Microsoft Office software
  • Must be able to collect, record, and analyze diagnostic data.

Information:

  • Pay: Min $67k – Mid $84k, depending on experience
  • Working hours: Average 40-hour week, 8-hour day; mostly Monday – Friday
