Position Announcement: BTW Business Unit Veterinarian

The Maschhoffs, the largest independent pork producer in the U.S., is looking for an Associate Director, BTW Business Unit Veterinarian, located in Carlyle, IL. The position reports to the Director, Health Services Department.

Job Overview:

The BTW Business Unit Veterinarian is responsible for supporting systems-based decisions as a liaison to the Breed-to-Wean (BTW) production unit, providing technical expertise in health management including biosecurity; disease identification, prevention, control and treatment; regulatory and food safety requirements; and shares in fiduciary responsibility for health decisions. The role supports implementation of the Health Services (HS) vision by providing tactical direction through training and deployment of a team of Herd Veterinarians performing Health Services. Services include reviewing evidence and making socially and fiscally responsible recommendations to BTW production leaders on intervention options based on sound science. The leader ensures transparency of health information to all stakeholders through the development and maintenance of electronic health monitoring tools. The role will maintain routine communication with the BTW leadership monitoring BTW and HS performance while seeking customer service feedback. Success requires routine communication with the HS Director providing updates on health strategy efficacy, identified threats to BTW health management and performance of the Herd Veterinarian team.

Job Duties & Accountabilities

Leadership

  • Select, train and calibrate Herd Veterinarians to perform HS Site Visits through regular field interaction and standard work instruction
  • Collaborate with BTW leadership to monitor health, identifying threats to health management and deploying resources appropriately for threat mitigation
  • Build an effective BTW HS team through active goal setting of the Herd Veterinarian team, monitoring performance and providing regular feedback via performance management
  • Divest from individual tasks, assign first-line work

Sustainably Improve BTW Health Metrics

  • Responsible for implementation of HS business unit level strategy and tactics with accountability for target metrics including: BTW Asset Biosecurity Scores, Transportation Biosecurity Scores, Acute and Endemic Disease Prevalence, BTW Food Safety Audit Scores, Residue Identification & Corrective Actions, and BTW Vet Med Spending vs. Budget

Communication

  • On-Board BTW divisional hires providing a health management overview
  • Communicate changes in BTW health management protocols to all stakeholders
  • Maintain routine communication with the BTW Director and Associate Directors monitoring BTW and HS performance while seeking feedback on health management execution and divisional customer service
  • Maintain routine communication with the HS Director providing feedback on health strategy efficacy, identified threats to health management and performance of Herd Veterinarian team
  • Develop and maintain electronic health monitoring and informational tools available to all stakeholders

Provide Technical Expertise to BTW in Health Management

  • Work in a spirit of partnership with BTW leadership to provide timely, science-based recommendations to its short- and long-term health management strategy while demonstrating financial responsibility
  • Collaborate with BTW management and HS Director to align and prioritize BTW health education needs as a component of routine business planning
  • Serve as a technical resource to BTW development, review and training of protocols related to health management
  • Make socially and fiscally responsible recommendations to BTW production leaders on intervention options preventing, controlling and treating disease which are based on sound science
  • Ensure TML compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and laws governing animal health and veterinary procedures in BTW

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

DVM degree from an accredited veterinary college and the ability to obtain licensure and USDA accreditation in IL, IN, MO, OK, GA, AL, NE and IA.

Experience:

3-5 years experience in swine medicine, regulatory compliance and disease prevention. Experience in personnel management is preferred.
