With a vision of "pioneering animal genetic improvement to help nourish the world," PIC seeks a Health Assurance Veterinarian to be involved in the development of the PIC Health Assurance Program and responsible for its implementation and maintenance throughout North America. The position reports to the North American Health Assurance Director. The location of the position is negotiable.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Degree of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited veterinary college.
- Minimum three years experience in swine medicine and production.
- An understanding of pork production systems and population medicine.
- Experience with swine disease diagnostics.
- Skilled in using technology including MS Excel and purpose built databases.
- Is a team player, used to a matrix organisation whilst can also be a self starter capable of working for periods of time in the field with minimum supervision.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Willing to travel both domestically and internationally.
Desirable
- Knowledge of North American animal movement and transportation regulations.
- Ability to work with large pork producers.
- Experience in auditing systems.
- Experience of working in a multi country environment and awareness of differing cultures and behaviors.
Responsibilities
- Implement and maintain the PIC Health Assurance Program to Genus/PIC multiplication and PIC customers, including but not limited to:
- Oversee and monitor the health program for PIC’s owned and contract multiplication.
- Provide all health status information concerning product sources to customers in a timely manner.
- Establish effective professional relationships with customers’ veterinarians and key production personnel to enable PIC account plan objectives.
- Interface with Technical Services, Sales and Supply Chain on issues concerning product sources and other health related issues.
- Manage health issues that arise when moving animals/semen to customer systems/herds.
- Perform health and biosecurity audits of the PIC multiplication pyramid.
- Work with Technical Services/Health Services to maximize genetic potential of PIC products within customer’s system/herd when necessary.
- Provide routine reports and data to the PIC Health Assurance database system.
- Provide welfare assessments to PIC multiplication and customers as needed.
- Manage health issues associated with imports/exports to facilitate global dissemination of PIC genes.
- Facilitate good relationships with government health officials around the world.
- Organize and participate in meetings with customers, and customer veterinarians.
- Implement PIC’s welfare policy in owned and contract multiplication. Educate all PIC employees on PIC welfare code of conduct.
- Remain current in area of responsibility through establishing a network of industry & academic contacts, studying literature and attending scientific/industry meetings.
- Assist in applied research and development of novel health technologies.
- Hold confidential all product and program proprietary knowledge.
