PED Update – June 12, 2013

Drs Jerome Geiger and Joe Connor have provided AASV with a white paper on the diagnosis and elimination of the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV). This paper, entitled Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea, Diagnosis, and Elimination, is based on their work with PEDV in China and contains a thorough description of a protocol for the herd-level elimination of the virus. We have posted the paper on the AASV PED web page.

Unfortunately, we have not received an aggregate update of new cases confirmed by the diagnostic labs since the week of 5/31. The veterinary diagnostic lab at the University of Minnesota, however, provided an updated case report from samples submitted to the Minnesota lab only. We posted this update on our web page along with a link to a new PED web page developed by the UMN.

Lastly, if you agreed to complete a PED Epidemiologic Survey we need those submitted to the AASV office by close of business on Friday. It is important that the survey be filled out completely with every question answered. Also, do not forget to submit a second survey of a similar but unaffected herd to serve as a control. The control survey should also be filled out completely.
