Position Announcement: Genetics Herd Veterinarian – Carlyle, Illinois

The Maschhoffs, one of the largest independent pork producers in the US, is seeking a Genetics Herd Veterinarian based in Carlyle, Illinois.

Job Overview

The Genetics Herd Veterinarian is responsible for supporting systems-based decisions as a liaison to the Genetics production unit, providing technical expertise in health management including biosecurity; disease identification, prevention, control and treatment; regulatory and food safety requirements; and shares in fiduciary responsibility for health decisions. In this position, the Genetics Herd Veterinarian will have the responsibility to maintain active collaboration with The Maschhoffs (TML) veterinary team to provide Genetics management personnel with fiscally and socially responsible strategies for managing the health of their animals. The role will maintain routine communication with the Genetics leadership monitoring Genetics and Health departmental performance while seeking customer service feedback. In addition, the position will provide training for development of Genetics production personnel, innovation to production practices, and stewardship of the company’s animals and other resources including the image of The Maschhoffs, LLC. Success requires routine communication with the Health Director providing updates on health strategy efficacy and identified threats to Genetics health management.

Job Duties & Accountabilities

Typical Duties of a Genetics Herd Veterinarian include:

  • Work in a spirit of partnership with Genetics leadership to provide timely, science-based recommendations to its short- and long-term health management strategy while demonstrating financial responsibility and actively reviewing and responding to performance metrics both specific to Health and shared with Genetics
  • Collaborate with Genetics leadership and other employees to monitor health, identifying threats to health management and deploying resources appropriately for threat mitigation
  • Communicate changes in Genetics health management protocols to all stakeholders maintaining routine communication with the Genetics Director, Assistant Director and Associate Directors as well as customers in the Breed-to-Wean (BTW) commercial system, and communicate routinely with the Health Director providing feedback on health strategy efficacy
  • Perform farm visits to establish a Valid-Client-Patient-Relationship (VCPR) with Genetics assets in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri & Nebraska, and perform regulatory duties to include script and medical record maintenance as well as certificates of inspection for animal movements
  • Collaborate in the development and execution of health strategies and programs that promote food safety and provide a residue free product to TML customers as well as ensure compliance with Customer Specification programs including but not limited to residue management and animal well-being
  • Provide scientifically grounded recommendations to the Genetics department anchored in the principles of Evidence Based Medicine, and collaborate with Genetics management and the Health Director to align and prioritize Genetics health education needs as a component of routine business planning

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

DVM Degree from an accredited veterinary college and the ability to obtain licensure and USDA accreditation in IL, MO, IN, and NE.

Experience:

3-5 years of experience in swine medicine, regulatory compliance and disease prevention.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Veterinary medicine practices, principles and policies
  • Industry standard practices of biosecurity, swine health management, food safety, and regulatory compliance
  • Current principles and practices of business management

Skill in:

  • Excellent written and verbal communications, including strong interpersonal relations, cross-divisional communication and relationship building, and public relations
  • Disease diagnosis and intervention strategy development
  • Organization, planning, and complex project management
  • Using strategy and other prioritization schemes to organize workflow
  • Uncompromising commitment to customer service
  • Adaptation to new and changing technology
  • Computer software tools including all Microsoft Office applications

Ability to:

  • Understand and anticipate customers’ needs, keeping them in mind when making decisions
  • Identify threats to performance and prioritize resource deployment
  • Analyze complex business problems, making socially and fiscally responsible business decisions
  • Complete return on investment analysis using biological assumptions
