Bulgaria Reports FMD Outbreak

Animal health authorities in Bulgaria have reported an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) serotype O on a farm in Burgas, Bulgaria. Authorities are observing clinical outbreaks in cattle, goats, sheep and swine. This is the first reported outbreak in Bulgaria since October 1996.

Exposure to meat and meat products from infected wild boars is considered the likely source of infection in the domestic livestock populations. Numerous blood samples submitted from all species have tested positive for FMD virus using the non-structural protein ELISA and antigen detection ELISA type O.

Stamping out of all susceptible animals was scheduled to be conducted January 11 and 12, 2011. Additional control measures (including controlling wildlife reservoirs, quarantine, movement controls, premises disinfection) have been implemented. Vaccination and treatment of affected animals is not allowed.
