We offer a unique opportunity for a population medicine veterinarian to gain experience in Public Health. The Center for Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) at the University of Minnesota is currently accepting applications for two openings with a start date of January 2011.
The CAHFS Veterinary Public Health (VPH) residency program draws applicants from around the world and offers a unique opportunity to pursue an MPH at one of the nation’s top schools of public health. VPH residency graduates go on to work in government, industry, and academia, with many of our alumni obtaining ACVPM diplomat status.
The two-year VPH residency program is designed to provide residents with public practice experiences in veterinary preventive medicine, public health, and population medicine practice. Each incoming resident is assigned to a faculty mentor who provides them with guidance and advice throughout their residency program. Residents work on teaching, research and service projects that provide them with training in the requisite veterinary public health skills and competencies. Residents without an MPH or advanced degree are expected to concurrently pursue an MPH degree while enrolled in the VPH residency program. Those in the MPH program participate in a world-class academic program offered through the University’s School of Public Health. VPH residents are hired at 75% appointment to the University of Minnesota. Residency benefits include health, dental and disability insurance as well as tuition benefits. Approximately 10 hours per week are available for MPH coursework in the School of Public Health. The CAHFS VPH residency program was the first in the U.S to receive recognition form the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM).
