pH1N1: Surveillance Testing and Vaccine Update

The USDA instituted a voluntary surveillance program on May 22, 2009 to test samples submitted to veterinary diagnostic laboratories for the novel H1N1 Pandemic Influenza Virus. To date, 114 swine samples have been submitted to the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) for testing and all have been negative.

The USDA’s Center for Veterinary Biologics (CVB) is continuing to test two master seeds derived from California (A/CA/04/09) and Mexican (A/MX/4108/09) influenza isolates with satisfactory results. No date has yet been released for availability of a commercial vaccine.
